Other Waste Initiatives
For household products that cannot be accepted through the curbside recycling program or disposed of in the garbage, the Village of Morton Grove offers residents additional options for safe and environmentally responsible disposal. As a member community of the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC), Morton Grove provides residents with access to a variety of waste management services, programs, and resources for special materials that may be toxic, hazardous, or otherwise unsuitable for traditional disposal. In partnership with SWANCC, the Village’s Family & Senior Services also sponsors programs for the proper disposal of unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as used needles and other sharps, helping protect residents and prevent these materials from entering the household waste stream. For household products that cannot go into the curbside recycling program or landfills, there are several ways to dispose of these materials through programs organized by SWANCC, the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County. Morton Grove is a member community of this regional, intergovernmental agency. As a member, Morton Grove residents are provided with a variety of waste management services, programs, and resource materials that include collections for special materials that are not allowed as part of recycling or should not go into garbage due to toxicity or recoverability.
There are a variety of drop-off locations and programs offered through SWANCC for the collection of electronics and other waste items that cannot be placed in landfills. Materials that can be recycled with these special programs through SWANCC include:

The Morton Grove Civic Center located at 6140 Dempster Street accepts sharps disposals and medications during regular business hours.
The Morton Grove Village Hall
The Morton Grove Village Hall located at 6101 Capulina Avenue accepts CFL bulbs and eyeglasses during regular business hours.

How do I Safely and Responsibly Recycle Old Batteries?
- Alkaline batteries may put in the trash.
- Rechargeable batteries are disposed of using the following steps:
- To prevent any fire hazard: place individual batteries in a plastic baggie,
- Wrap with plastic wrap or tape the terminals with electrical or duct tape.

Family & Senior Services for the Village of Morton Grove, in conjunction with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County, is sponsoring a program for the environmentally-safe disposal of unused prescription drugs, expired “over the counter” drugs and needles known as “sharps”. Sharps disposal allows residents, who self inject medications, the option of bringing in their used sharps for proper disposal and help to prevent the sharps from entering the household waste system.

Acceptable items for prescription drug disposal include unused prescription medications, expired prescription medications, prescription cough syrup, prescription eye drops and expired over-the-counter medications. Pharmaceutical controlled substances will not be accepted.
General Tips
- Prescription drugs that are more than a year old should be disposed of properly.
- Turn in non-prescription medications without an expiration date that are more than 6 months old.
- Keep pharmaceuticals in their original containers with labels to identify contents.
- All sharps need to be in a rigid container with a sealed lid and put in a zipped plastic bag prior to dropping off.
